圣诞树 Christmas Tree

    据称，圣诞树最早出现在古罗马12月中旬的农神节，德国传教士尼古斯在公元8世纪用纵树供奉圣婴。随后，德国人把12月24日作为亚当和夏娃的节日，在家放上象征伊甸园的“乐园树”，上挂代表圣饼的小甜饼，象征赎罪；还点上蜡烛，象征基督。到16世纪，宗教改革者马丁.路德，为求得一个满 天星斗的圣诞之夜，设计出在家中布置一颗装着蜡烛的圣诞树。

    圣诞老人 Santa Claus

    圣诞老人原指公元4世纪时小亚细亚专区的主教尼古拉，他因和蔼可亲慷慨济贫万里闻名。到了6世纪，东方把他尊称为圣尼古拉。由于民间有关尼古拉的传说中，都联系到少年儿童和礼物，从此，圣诞老人便成为专门在圣诞节向孩子们送礼物的慈祥老人的形象。到了18世纪，通过文学和绘画，圣诞老人逐渐成为身穿红外衣的白胡子、白眉毛老人形象。

    圣诞礼物 Christmas Gift    

    据《圣经》记载，来自东方的圣人在耶稣降生的时候赠送礼物，这就是圣诞老人为儿童赠送礼品习俗的由来。英国孩子在圣诞前夕把长统袜子放在壁炉旁，相信圣诞老人在夜里会从大烟囱下来，给他们带来满袜子的礼物。法国的孩子把鞋放在门口，让圣婴来时把礼物放在鞋里面。

    圣诞大餐 Christmas Dinner 　　

    正像国人过春节吃年夜饭一样，欧美人过圣诞节也很注重全家团聚，围坐在圣诞树下，共进节日美餐。圣诞大餐吃火鸡的习俗始于1620年，火鸡烤制工艺复杂，味道鲜美持久，以致麦兜小朋友垂涎三尺。这种风俗盛于美国。英国人的圣诞大餐是烤鹅，而非火鸡。奥大利人爱在平安夜里，全家老小约上亲友成群结队地到餐馆去吃一顿圣诞大餐，其中，火鸡、腊鸡、烧牛仔肉和猪腿必不可少，同时伴以名酒，吃得大家欢天喜地。

    圣诞卡 Christmas Card

    世界上第一张圣诞卡是1843年英国人亨利.高乐爵士提议，由约翰.卡尔葛荷斯利设计的。卡片上画的是一个贵族家庭，三代人一齐举杯对一位不在场的亲友表示祝贺。当时他印了1000张，没有用完的印刷厂就以每张1先令的价钱卖出。圣诞卡就这样诞生了

 1.Dead meat

    合同工Jerry不是很受欢迎，所以他走时，大家也都松了一口气。第二天早晨见Lori坐在Jerry原来的位置上，我就开玩笑地冲她说：“Hi jerry！”其他人听了都笑了，且说我可真mean（“坏”的意思）。果然，再见到Lori时候，她就对我说“Dead meat。”
我听了心想，她一定是生气了，不然怎么会这样叫我，于是找到她，向她解释说我只是开玩笑，如果她生气的话，那么我道歉。她忙说知道我开玩笑，怎么会生气。

    原来“Dead meat”是指“You are in trouble”。就像是中文里一方和另一方开玩笑后，另一方会说：“好吧，这下你麻烦了，我要给你点颜色看看”，和Dead meat的表层意思一点关系都没有！

    2.At one’s peak

    A person at his/her peak has reached the highest level of his/her capability. An athlete may feel he /she at his/her peak at a certain time of the day or after a certain amount of exercise. Someone else may think he is at his peak when he is well-rested. The same term can define someone who has attained the highest level of his/her individual achievement in life。“My grandfather decided to retire once he felt he was no longer at his peak。”

    Peak是山峰。“At one‘s peak“比喻人在某方面得才能或成就已经登峰造极。对于一个运动员来说，一天的某个时间或经过一定训练后，他/她处于最佳状态。一个人如果休息的很好，可以认为他的精神状态处于颠峰。这个短语也可以比喻一个人一生中最辉煌的阶段。例如：”祖父觉得自己的颠峰时刻已过，便决定退休！“

    3.Drug-free

    妈妈来我这里小住，我开车载她四处逛逛。有次跟在一辆大卡车后面，卡车车身砌满了公司名号，还标榜该公司是个Drug-free company。妈妈英语程度有限，看了以后疑惑的问我说：“这家公司怎么这么好，员工生病了，还有免费的药可吃？”
原来妈妈不知道，这句词中的Drug-free是指“不吸毒”的意思，她误以为是指“免费吃药”！

    4.Shot in the neck 喝醉酒

    感恩节去舅舅家串门，到那里时，他们刚用过晚餐不久，大家交谈的交谈，收拾的收拾，唯独没有看到表哥，我便问，怎么表哥不在？舅舅的洋媳妇笑笑说，表哥“shot in the neck”

    我一愣，怎么会被射中颈部？看看周围的人个个高高兴兴的，有说有笑，一点不像出过什么事，实在糊里糊涂，便拉过先生悄悄的问他，那到底是怎么一回事。经他一解释才解开了疑团。
 
    原来，shot in the neck是喝醉酒的意思！

    5.It’s not someone‘s day

    “Oh，my, this is not my day！”Felix exclaimed。“I was late getting out of the house to go to work。Then I missed my bus。When a bus finally came，I discovered I had left my wallet at home。Really，I should have stayed in bed for it’s not my day！“When someone experiences a day of misfortunes，he or she might say （as flex does）that it’s not his/her day。
 
    “噢！今天可真不走运！“Felix说，”上班时候出门太晚，错过了班车。好不容易才等来下一辆巴士，却又把钱包忘在家里了。真是喝水都塞牙，我真该躺在床上不出门！“当一个人在某一天里无论做什么都不顺利的时候，可以说：”it’s not his/her day“！

    6.Are you shortsighted？ ( nearsighted / shortsighted )

    多年前我在Community College进修英文，某日老师进入教室后向我们宣布，她得眼镜坏了，看不清楚字，今天不用课本，以自由交谈得方式上课。我立刻打开话匣子问老师：“Are you shortsighted？”老师瞪了我一眼，然后用冷淡的音调回答：“I am not shortsighted。”

    我仍然不知趣的继续问她：“How come you can’t see very well？”这时候老师知道我又在说中国英文，便心平气和利用机会来教育我们，她说：“I am a nearsighted person. I am not shortsighted. There is a difference between nearsightedness and shortsighted.”

    Nearsighted表示此人视力有问题,而shortsightedness表示此人没有远见的意思!

    7.I want to buy two mice ( mouses—-鼠标的复数形式)

    记得到公司上班不久，我用的那台电脑的鼠标坏了，恰好，同事的鼠标性能也不好，就向Supervisor（主管）请示后，我决定去附近的电脑商店购买。选好鼠标后，我对售货员说：“I want to buy two mice。”“What？”售货员一脸大惑不解。我忙扬扬手中的鼠标，“mouses。”她恍然大悟。回来后向公司的老美同事请教，才知道mouse作老鼠解释时，复数应该用mice，做鼠标解释时，复数应该用mouses，真的是弄巧成拙！

    8.Do you have any juice?

    我在一家美国人的贸易公司做事，有一次老板临时决定出差去广州。适逢广州交易会期间，各大宾馆的房间都客满了。一时订不到房间，几个白人同事和我以及老板正在讨论此事。老板突然向我发问到：“Janet，do you have any pull？”
看到我一脸茫然的样子，他换了个词说：“Do you have any juice？”我听了更是摸不到头脑，以为他想要“something to drink”，就试探着问道“What kind of juice do you want？Apple juice, orange juice？“旁边的一个白人同事和老板哈哈大笑。
后来他们解释到说：“Pull”和“juice”都是俚语，意思是“connection”，就是问我在广州有没有”关系“可以帮他订到旅馆。

    9.Change dress

    二十多年前,我在美国一家著名的大公司工作,上司是一位年轻美丽的美国小姐塔妮.由於她对於属下的升迁加薪,全凭送礼的多,寡,贵,贱做准,造成单位职员竞相送礼之风.後来上级主管所风闻,就召集我们这个单位职员开会,要调迁塔妮的职位.在开会中,塔妮一再质问”Why do you want to change my dress?”

    我听到她说”为什么要换我的衣服?”心中十分奇怪.为什么上级主管要换她的衣服呢?後来我才知道”Change dress”就是调职的意思.真是贻笑大方.

    10.naughty vs. active

    久未见面的老外问我：“How is your baby son？”我想说我的儿子非常顽皮活泼好动，就说：“He is very，very naughty。”
哪知老外一听愣了，随即意会到我的用词的不当，他告诉我naughty是个贬义词；形容婴儿好动可爱用active，所以我应该说：“My son is very active。”

    原来如此！
