The full pot of water makes no sound; the half-empty pot of water is noisy. A little knowledge (or learning) can be (or is) dangerous.(一知半解很危险)
He who knows the most says the least.(懂得越多的人,反而说得越少。)
A truly wise person does not show off his (her) ability.(真正聪明的人,是不会显要自己的能力)

As the water level sinks, the stones are exposed. All secrets may eventually come to light.
Eventually, every secret will be disclosed.

The apples on the other side of the wall are the sweetest.(意思是:墙那边的苹果最甜)当然,如要译成:If you stand on a mountain, you feel the distant mountain seems higher than yours. The grass always looks greener on the other side.(另一边的草,看来总是绿些。)

Fire is the test of gold;adversity is the test of friendship. Liquor brings out a person’s true color.(烈酒能显示一个人真正的特色)
  或者说:Wine reveals a person’s true heart. By a long road, we know a horse’s strength;at times of difficulty, we discover a friend’s true character.

The thunder roars loudly, but little rain falls. All we hear is thunder, but no rain falls.
All we hear is words, but there is no action.(只动嘴不动手)
或Actions and words should go hand in hand.

A man can not be known by his look, nor can the ocean be measured by a dipper.
A man can not be judged by his appearance, nor can the water in the sea be measured by a bucket. We can not judge a person by appearance only.或You can not judge a book by its cover.(意思是:一本书的好坏取决于它的内容,而不是它的封面装帧的漂亮与否。)

His mouth is honey; his heart is a sword.外国人听了会对这样的比喻摸不着头脑,如果要形容某人“口蜜腹剑,笑里藏刀”,我们可以说with honey on one’s lip and murder in one’s heart,或者honey-mouthed but dagger-hearted. He is an evil man who has a mouth that praises and a hand that kills.

If you neglect study when you are young, what may happen to your old age? Studying / working hard can lead you to a brighter / more promising future. 当然也可以对年轻人说:Study hard when you are young. It will pay off when you get older.

Learning is like rowing upstream; not to advance is to drop back.
Learning seems like rowing upstream(逆流);if one does not advance, one will fall back.
Learning is like rowing against the current(激流), if one does not advance, one will retreat.
If you don’t make progress, you will fall behind.

He who teaches me for one day is my father for life.
If you are my teacher for even one day, you will be my teacher (mentor) all my life.
He who teaches me may be considered my father-figure for life.

Teach others to fish and they will fish for a lifetime.(授人以鱼,不如授人以渔)
Give a man fish, he will have a meal; teach him to fish, he will have food all his life.

Faithful words are contrary to the ears; good medicine tastes bitter to the mouth.
Bitter words are medicine; sweet words bring illness.
Good advice often jars on the ears; bitter pills have good effects.
Honest advice may be distasteful to the recipient.
Honest advice is hard to accept.
Truth is a hard pill to swallow.
Truth hurts.

有人直译为one who stays near vermilion gets stained red, and one who stays near ink gets stained black(vermilion是朱砂或鲜红色的意思)
When you touch black, you become black; when you touch red, you become red.
One takes the behavior of one’s company. One takes on the attributes of one’s associates.
Watch the company you keep!(小心交朋友!)
As he who lies with dogs will ride with fleas, how could your son learn anything good by mixing with those people?

Do you think playing with their kids is hard work?

When it comes to parenthood, the tasks are endless,as you have to put your whole self in— feeding, bathing, diapering, dressing — the list goes on and on. So when it comes time to get down on the floor and play, who can blame a mom if she’s too tired to push Matchbox cars around for two hours?Or  to be a play-on-the-floor mom.

“I feel enormous pressure and guilt when it comes to playing with my kids,” says Meca, one of my best friends who’s just be a mammy for 2 years. “I remember being pregnant with my second and reading an article about parents relearning how to play. At the time, I was still fairly enamored with being a mother and thought it was a little sad, but it’s become a self-fulfilling prophesy. No sooner had I judged that article than I began having trouble coming up with dialog for the action figure I had been assigned for the moment.”Yes this remids me what my mom always says”You won’t understand till you’re in this situation”.

Peole would say  playing with your kids shouldn’t feel like work, but for many of us, it does, and we definitely feel guilty about it. Actually, parents need to stop pressuring themselves to be the ideal playmate all the time, every day. Relax and enjoy the time you spend playing with your kids, no matter if it’s for five minutes or two hours.Play with your kids on the soft and fresh Area Rugs won’t be that tired, isn’t it?One thing only matters is that the child and parent enjoy these special times together.Play will also becomes more and more complex as children get older, the toddlers and preschoolers can exhaust parents with their imaginations. Then it’s time to promote independent play, but for a mom like my friend,I suggest storis playing and music actions. There’s a simple baby game I learned from college, which called big fish. The fun part is that you play and you learn the English words.Kids can pick up the second language while playing.Anyone wanna join me?First, make sure the floor is ok for kids incase they stumble, that’s why we put Rugs on the floor, but no need to take the expensive ones,as kids may make it dirty soon.Next, mom plays the character of fish mammy and your kid is baby fish. Then you can make any stories of yourself with the theme of to become a big fish.Just remember one thing,no matter what game you’re playing, keep an eye on your baby and Cheap Rugs are very important.

Are you still in  pressure when speaking playing with your child?Well, don’t be.

英语学习专家提醒:英语学习重在运用,要动起来, be active in your study!

    1. You have matches

    2. Turn the table

再说远一点, turn the tables (on someone)这个短语也和“桌子”没什么关系, 它的意思是to suddenly take a position of strength or advantage that was formerly held by someone else (反败为胜,转弱为强), 例如: “She played badly in the first set, but then she turned the tables on her opponent and won the match.

    3. Wearing two hats

先生在向我介绍他的同事 Larry 时,说他可是个大忙人: “He is wearing two hats.”

    4. With a grain of salt

Allen 说了一句:“I’d like to take it with a grain of salt”。 Allen 愣了一下,然后大笑不已,解释道“ Take something with a grain of salt” 是“对某事有保留、持怀疑态度”的意思。

5.You are in for a treat!

Rhonda便开始滔滔不绝的介绍他们的招牌菜,听得我十指大动,直咽口水,Rhonda便笑着说: “You are in for a treat !” 我愣了一下,以为Rhonda要请我去那里吃饭,心里十分不好意思,试探着问过她之后,Rhonda 笑着解释说: “You are in for a treat means you’ll like it !”

    6. Knife and fork

    7. Skeleton in the closet

他说的“skeleton in the closet”(英国人则习惯说成skeleton in the cupboard)现在的意义并没有那么可怕。 Many old families have a number of skeletons in their closets which they are loath to discuss(许多古老的家族中有很多秘密,他们不愿谈及这些话题。)

    8. Skin off one’s nose

他听完后说: “No skin off my nose.”

注:no skin off sb.’s nose 也可说成 no skin off sb.’s teeth

    9. Small beer

客人就可能回答说:“I’ll have a small beer(给我一点儿啤酒。)” He thinks no small beer of himself. Ours is a small-beer fast-food joint beside McDonald.(摘自《联合早报》)

    10. Spaghetti

    11. Speaking of the devil

Joe于是说“speaking of the devil”。

    12.Stolen from … dealer

    13. Sweet tooth

当医生为我检查的时候,他问我:“Do you have a sweet tooth?”我很无辜地回答:“I had a doughnut this morning before coming here. I brushed my teeth. There is no sweet tooth.”

    14.The Hong Kong dog

Walker has a touch of the Hong Kong dog and will be here a little bit late.” The Hong Kong dog

    15. Throw the book at Somebody

先生答曰:结果是“They threw the book at him”。 原来并非如此,“Throw the book at somebody”是指给某人最大极限的惩罚:charge someone to the full range of law。
